No one wants to get a migraine.

Migraines are associated with the worst form of pain – a throbbing, pulsating headache in one or both sides of the head that may go on for up to 72 hours.

The headache also worsens with bodily movement, which, in addition to increased sensitivity to light and smell, makes this one of the hardest conditions to live with.

Most medication for migraines contains compounds that inhibit the triggers that lead to the condition, and can be accessed at any pharmacy. Still, you need to consult with a doctor first because some medications tend to affect some people negatively. If you’re sure it’s a migraine you’re facing, consider the following drugs.

Painkillers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin

Anti- depressants: Drugs used to treat depression such as tricyclics are also recommended for use in treating migraines. Only take under the guidance of a physician.

Hypertension medications

Seizure medications: Anti-seizure medications are also suggested by doctors as a treatment alternative for migraines.

Triptans: These are common drugs sold over the counter and used to treat migraines. Examples include sumatriptan, rizotriptan, eleptriptan, zolmitriptan etc.

Anti-emetics: These are drugs designed to treat nausea. Examples include metoclopramide, and they can be used to treat migraines too.

Botox: Though largely popular for its use in plastic surgery and facial lifting, findings show that botox can also be administered in a series of regular injections to treat migraines. Talk to your doctor about what it takes to get botox.

Surgery: Like with many ailments, surgery is usually the last option for treatment. A form of surgery that involves the decompression of the extracranial sensory branches of the brain is sometimes done to relieve migraines.

Note: Combining one too many of these chemicals can result in serotonin syndrome, which is seen by a rise in serotonin levels in blood and results in symptoms such as involuntary muscle jerking and poor cognition.

Start monitoring your triggers

Following the pattern you see, find ways of avoiding them and breaking the cycle, such as keeping away from sources of triggers on particular days.

Monitor your oestrogen levels

Constant hormonal dips and rises among women are the reason women are three times more likely to experience more migraines than men. Everything from birth control pills to menstruation affects your oestrogen levels, with the levels rising too high in some cases. To control this migraine trigger, talk to your doctor about shifting to drugs containing less oestrogen.

Engage in regular exercise

The advantages of exercise to the body in relation to mitigating migraines are directly connected to stress, anxiety and many other migraine inducing ailments. Exercise improves blood circulation in tissues on top of everything else, which is one way to control the blood flow pattern that causes migraines.
